Location: The Edinburgh Bookshop, 219 Bruntsfield Place, EH10 4DH
To celebrate Book Week Scotland award-winning Kenyan-Scottish performance storyteller, Mara Menzies, joins us with her first book for adults, Blood and Gold: A Journey of Shadows. Filled with tragedy, wonder and magic, Blood and Gold explores the themes of loss and oppression, while asking us to examine our own identities, attitudes, and humanity.
Mara Menzies is a celebrated, prizewinning narrative artist who draws on her rich, dual Kenyan/Scottish cultural heritage to create worlds that explore contemporary issues, slavery and colonialism through legend, myth and fantasy. Woven throughout her stories are deeper themes of black culture, womanhood, motherhood, joy, love and jealousy. Blood and Gold is based on Mara’s acclaimed storytelling performance, which premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2019 to rapturous praise and has been toured in 27 countries.
