This is a live, in-person event.

Location: Christ Church Main Hall, 6a Morningside Road, EH10 4DD

As part of her 2023 bookshop tour, Persephone Books' Francesca Beauman will be joining The Edinburgh Bookshop for a Q&A to talk about the history of this iconic publisher and bookseller.

Why are the covers grey? Why the goddess Persephone? How do they choose which books to bring back to life? All will be revealed by author and Persephone publisher, Francesca Beauman, in this fascinating event. There will also be a selection of Persephone titles available on the night to browse and buy.

About Persephone:

Persephone Books reprints 'lost' and neglected fiction and non-fiction, mostly by women writers and mostly mid-twentieth century. All of our 147 books are intelligent, thought-provoking and beautifully written. We publish mostly novels, but also short stories, diaries, memoirs, poetry, gardening books and cookery books; each title has an elegant grey jacket and a patterned endpaper, along with a matching bookmark.

About Francesca:

Francesca Beauman grew up in London, studied History at Cambridge, and began her career as the host and writer of a number of television shows for BBC1, Channel 4 and Channel 5.  She is the author of seven books, including a history of the pineapple and a history of personal ads; she remains the world’s leading expert on both these subjects. Francesca now works at publishing company Persephone Books. She is also a regular chairperson at literary festivals and arts events and Vice-Chair of the Holburne Museum. She lives in Bath in Somerset.
