We're delighted to welcome Fiction Direct's Sally Evans, Morelle Smith and some more of their authors to discuss the launch of their new publishing house and introduce us to some of their new books - Lettersgait, Beyond the Lion Gate, and Inside DAMMA - with some short readings.

About the Books:

LETTERSGAIT is Sally Evans' second novel about authors, this time a successful Victorian novelist and her descendants through the twentieth century and beyond. Family secrets, a sestineer, and locations including Lettersgait on the Fife coast, Manchester, London and Teesdale.

BEYOND THE LION GATE by Morelle Smith is a beautifully engaging novel of young people working in an organisation in Albania in the 1990s. How Paula faces the changing truths about her fellow workers, and learns to deal with her strong response to Engjell, and how the group of friends and workers manage to move on. More than a love story, full of authentic detail of the problems, dangers and landscapes in a country recovering from political turmoil, and with a warm underlying philosophy of survival.

INSIDE DAMMA by Ruth Aylett, Morag Burgon-Lyon, Greg Michaelson and Judy Robertson

If you believe in magic, or are leery about walking on pavement cracks, DAMMA would like to hear from you! Contribute to cutting edge research - all perfectly safe and entirely ethical.Or is it? Come inside the Department of Applied Meta-Magical Anthropology. Are its staff mages, magicians, conjurors, con artists? Or ordinary folk, desperately juggling work and life, chasing the next deadline as they fend off their bosses? This laugh-aloud tale, set in a University that could be near you, shows there’s less to luck than black cats and ladders

About Fiction Direct:

Fiction Direct is a new Scottish-based publishing house for authors as well as readers. Morelle Smith and Sally Evans decided to band together to produce, edit, typeset and print their books co-operatively, under the new imprint Fiction Direct. They would involve more writers. They would read all Fiction Direct books, find beta readers to check them, typeset them as standard novels, design the covers, and contribute to publicity, using their own skills and advice from others to keep the project feasible. Their aim is to link authors and readers and share some of the smiles and secrets with their readers.

Sally Evans holds a PhD in Creative Writing from Lancaster University, concentrating on novels containing poetry. She has published many poets' books and edited 100 issues of Poetry Scotland from 1997 to 2018.  Morelle Smith holds a degree in English and French Language and Literature and is an international traveller, linguist, and translator. Both are published writers.
